Error in recognizing USB gateway

Look in Device Manager (see Windows help for assistance). Find the Human Interface Devices section. The USB stick creates two entries: HID-compliant device and USB Input Device. The stick is usually the last USB Input Device listed:

  • Is there any colored "mark" or an error code (28) driver not installed?
  • Click on the Uninstall driver option and remove it.
  • Reboot the PC.
  • Open device manager again to watch the stick reload.
  • Replace the stick; a HID-compliant device and USB Input Device should appear. The device should now work.
Error in loading USB gateway software

The USB/ERF Gateway Software only works on Windows XP/SP3, Vista/SP2 and Windows 7/SP1 (32-bit and 64-bit). If it fails to run, uninstall it, download a new copy, and install it again. If you still get an error message in the software, please send a screen shot of the error or write down the exact wording

Display loses forecast days (blank boxes)
  • See our Lost Forecast instructions when the display has blank boxes, or you experience a service interruption (e.g. turn off PC, lose internet, power outage or low batteries).
  • A USB Gateway must stay connected (PC on), or be manually synchronized. PC suggestions are in our Power Management Guide.
Restart USB Software
  1. Find the USB ERF Gateway icon in the bottom right hand corner of your computer (a blue square with a yellow sun in it.)
  2. Right click on the icon and select the option Exit.
  3. Connect to the internet.
  4. Open the USB ERF Gateway. (Go to your start menu > All Programs > USB ERF Gateway)
  5. Press and hold the "+" button on the Display unit. Let it go when you hear it "beep".

Your unit should have the correct forecast information if you hear a second beep.

Popup box says "Gateway is unknown or already registered"

Ensure the serial number in the software matches the serial number on the USB gateway. If it is not, replace the USB gateway with the correct one.

Make sure the USB gateway is not already registered in your account on the server (website's left-hand navigation side):

  • If Gateway 1 shows in the navigation bar, DELETE it from the website and do a factory reset on the gateway by pressing the Factory Reset button in the software.
  • The USB gateway must be plugged into the computer in order for you to perform a Factory Reset. Further details are in the Lost Forecast document, Appendix A, referenced above.
Gateway fails to register on website

Check for multiple network connections, as it probably defaulted to the wrong one. Click PC Network Interface drop down box on the USB software and select the #2 connection. It should then connect. (You will most often see this with DSL connections.)

We no longer support dial-up service as components may timeout and fail to register. Our support is limited to explaining how the USB stick functions on high-speed internet.

Display fails to register

Using dial-up? See our comments above.

Before attempting any of the following troubleshooting tips, turn off Firewalls and/or any Anti-virus program running. These programs may inhibit the communication between the USB Transceiver and our servers. Please try to register at different times of the day, and on at least one different day, as high Internet traffic may cause a delay.

USB Transceiver can't connect to internet when
  • PC goes into sleep mode or hibernate mode, see our .Power Management Guide
  • You have to manually connect to the Internet.
  • The USB Transceiver is not connected to your computer (e.g. unplugged or loose).
  • The Internet service has been disconnected, interrupted, or lost.
  • You have an Anti-Virus program blocking our signal. (You may need to allow our program C:\Program Files\USB_ERF_Gateway\USB_ERF_Gateway.exe as approved.)

NOTE: Anti-virus software may be temporarily disabled to diagnose a problem, but should resume protecting your PC.

See our Lost Forecast instructions when the display has blank boxes, or you experience a service interruption (e.g. turn off PC, lose internet, power outage or low batteries). Concise steps:

Also try the steps in the Restart USB Software section above.

If you still fail to update the display, you may need to factory reset the units and re-register.

Factory Reset a USB Gateway
  • Log into your account.
  • Delete both the display and the gateway from your account (click on weather station 1, select Delete this Device, then do the same for Gateway 1)
  • Press the Factory Reset button on the software.
  • Press and hold the SET and ALARM buttons on the display until you hear it Beep twice. Remove the batteries, press any button on the display with no batteries in the unit 20 times to clear any residual energy.
  • Proceed to re-register the units like the first time it was set up.

NOTE: You will not have to re-download the USB ERF Gateway.
